Sanjay Gupta--really?

Why do I feel as though there is something vaguely undignified about the nomination for Surgeon General? I can't nail it.

Is it that: a) I feel like that post is supposed to be occupied by someone who has conducted legit, peer-reviewed research; contributed something at least moderately important to the field of public health, via either hands-on, activist-type efforts or research;

or: b) something about how the cult of celebrity itself is becoming a serious credential for serious work, and that further erodes the under-girding of intellectual and public service life in the U.S.;

or: c) that he's too young and good-looking to be Surgeon General (though Obama's in the same camp, and I don't feel that way about his presidency)?

I don't know. Anyone?

  1. I think you pretty much nailed it with "vaguely undignified." Something just feels sort of smug and joke-y about it, like he's not a real doctor, he just plays one on tv....
